LUSEM professors about to be inaugurated: Great to be on site!

Published: 2021-10-07

On 15 October two of our colleagues at LUSEM will be inaugurated as professors when Lund University finally holds the inauguration ceremony, postponed last year.

Hi and congratulations, Kerstin!

Becoming a professor, what has it meant to you? Has it changed anything regarding research or teaching?

"I'm very happy about becoming a professor, it is a recognition of my research and my research focus. It hasn't changed my research much, since I have external research grants, but when it comes to teaching, I have set up a course at the Bachelor’s in Economy and Society called 'EOSE09 Regional Development and Growth' which I hope will attract interested students and strengthen research."

You've been a professor for a while, how does it feel now to finally be inaugurated?

"There was no question of arranging any inauguration ceremony during the pandemic and it feels good that it will actually be done, and on site! I think that events like this are more fun when they take place in real life than digitally, therefore I think it was good that the inauguration was canceled last year."

The inauguration will be a hybrid solution, will it be the solemn event you may have dreamed of or would you rather have seen the auditorium filled to the brim?

"It suits me perfectly well that it will be a hybrid. Of course, it would have been fun with a an overcrowded hall, but now my parents in Stockholm can participate from a distance, it wouldn't be possible for them to participate in Lund due to health reasons. At the same time my husband and my children can be in the hall which of course feels great!"

Hi and congratulations Jörgen!

Becoming a professor, what has it meant to you? Has it changed anything regarding research or teaching?

"It is of course a great honour, but so far it has not affected my work so much. I am busy with being Head of Department of Business Law and the director of the Center for European Studies. It is also important to me to contribute to the teaching at the department, not at least when it comes to the new focus on international trade law and sustainability within our master's programme. In the long run, however, the plan is to be able to conduct more extensive research efforts. I am really looking forward to that!"

The inauguration will be a hybrid solution, will it be the solemn event you may have dreamed of or would you rather have seen the auditorium filled to the brim?

"In these Covid times, everything gets a little different and less glamorous. Now it feels great to be able to sit down in the auditorium and be surrounded by an audience. Kind of sad though is that my colleague Niklas Arvidsson, who also became a professor in 2020 but a little later, has to wait until next year's inauguration. It would have been really fun to do this together."

The chairman of Lund University's student unions gives the students' speech to the newly inaugurated professors, and you get to answer. How does that feel?

"It is an honor to give a thank you speech to the students. Without students no University! And the students have had a very tough time lately. For almost two years, they have had to struggle with their distance studies without normal social contacts. At the same time, knowledge and independent critical thinking have never been more important. The whole world is facing major and tangible changes as a result of the climate crisis, and in Europe the common view of democracy is threatened as media is controlled and courts are politicized in some countries. Despite these societal challenges, I will do my best to give an encouraging speech."

Thank you and congratulations, Kerstin and Jörgen!
