Time to defend your thesis

Procedure, deadlines, forms and templates

Your PhD studies culminate in the submission of a doctoral thesis which you must verbally defend at a public defence (“disputation”). The thesis defence is a formal event and these pages covers the procedure and deadlines you need to consider when preparing your defence.

Your thesis must be defended in public in the presence of an expert in the field from another university, known as the opponent. As the author, defending your doctoral thesis, you are known as the respondent

There must also be a chairman of the public defence and an examining committee. The examining committee evaluates the thesis and your defence of the thesis. Based on their evaluation, the committee assigns a grade of “Pass” or “Fail”.

The thesis defence is a formal event and these pages cover the procedure and deadlines you need to consider when preparing your defence.
